"Prinzipalmarkt" in Münster

Münster is characterized by both innovation and tradition. The
1200-year-old history is reflected in the medieval ground plan of the old
city and numerous historical buildings. Offering, as it does, a large
variety of functions in a narrow space and a high standard of urban
development, the old town is an excellent example of European municipal
tradition. The large number of urban open-spaces, as well as the closed
green belt around the old town and its location in the attractive park
landscape of the Münsterland can be counted among the striking
qualities of Münster.

Modern Münster presents itself as the city of colleges and
universities of international renommée and as the location for innovative
centres of research- and technology-transfer. A large proportion of young
people, numerous facilities and
institutions related to the universities and colleges, a cultural life
which is greatly influenced by the numbers of students and, not least,
the great importance of the bicycle as a means of transport lend greatly
to the atmosphere of the city. The exploitation of scientific potentials
is an important basis for a future-orientated economic development. The
international sculptural exhibitions, which received great acclaim, and
the construction of the Picasso-Museum have distinguished Münster
nationwide as a lively cultural city.

As a Westphalian service-, trade- and administrative centre, Münster
assumes important functions for a region with more than 1.5 million
inhabitants. Because of the various interconnections with the surrounding
countryside, regional cooperation is gaining in importance. As it wants
to be open to Europe, Münster especially fosters intensive
cooperation with Dutch partners in connection with EUREGIO and the town
triangle of Münster, Osnabrück and Enschede/Hengelo.
There is a tradition of future-viability in Münster. For decades
urban development has been driven forward under the guidelines of
saving resources and environmental compatibility . In city rankings,
the quality of enthusiastic urban development was frequently confirmed:
Bicycle Capital, Climate Protection Capital, Online Capital, the most
important potential being the active citizens, without whose enthusiasm
many of the successes of urban development would be unthinkable.
