Für Fritz Schmücker erfüllt sich mit dem Projekt ein lang gehegter Wunsch: "Zum ersten Mal haben wir beim Jazzfestival ein Angebot auch für Kinder", unterstreicht der künstlerische Leiter den familiären Charakter des morgendlichen Jazzvergnügens. Dass es sich auch noch um eine deutsch-französische Koproduktion handele - Musik: Norbert Stein (Köln) / Jean Mereu (Lyon) - sei mit Blick auf den Festivalschwerpunkt Frankreich geradezu ein Glücksfall.
Der Kölner Komponist und Saxofonist Stein hat für seine musikalische Mär um die schöne Kaufmannstochter namhafte Künstler aus seiner eigenen Musikformation Pata und aus der französischen Musikerkooperative Arfi versammelt. Sie folgen mit Saxofon, Trompeten und Flöten dem Erzähler Josef Hofmann in eine fantasiereiche Märchenwelt. An außergewöhnlichen Klangskulpturen, darunter mancherlei elektronisches Gerät, Riesenflöten und eine mit rumpelnden Steinen gefüllte Drehtrommel, entfaltet sich die Geschichte um "die Schöne" mit dem großen Herzen.
Die Musiker geben dem Publikum Zeit und Muße, den Klängen nachzulauschen und sich von den Bildern des Leverkusener Künstlers Rolf Wetter mitnehmen zu lassen. Dessen Illustrationen werden an eine große Leinwand im dunklen Rund des Kleinen Hauses projiziert. Dort heißt es am 7. Januar ab 10.30 Uhr dann "Es war einmal ein reicher Kaufmann, der hatte sechs Kinder ..."
Der Kartenvorverkauf für die Matinee (10 Mark / fünf Mark unter 16 Jahren) läuft an den Kassen der Städtischen Bühnen.
