The connection between Dortmund and the seaport of Emden is over 100 years old. Off the major roads, without any remarkable elevations, this bicycle route is ideally suited for families with children and bicyclists of all age groups.
For the most part, the route takes course directly along the Canal on the former towpaths, crossing the diversified natural and cultural landscapes. The route links the four touristic regions Ruhr, Münsterland, Emsland, and East Friesland in a unique fashion. On their way, bicyclists may experience brisk naval traffic, explore ports, ship hoists, and industrial memorials, and visit fantastic castles. In case all the water has put you in a marine mood, you can look forward to a detour to the North See island of Norderney.
