Structuring the historical heritage
Anniversaries: Examples of a living historical culture
Where the well-being of the city is concerned, Münster can rely on its citizens - this is the case, for example, with the campaign to become "European Capital of Culture 2010".

In 1993 Münster celebrated its 1200th anniversary.
In 1998 Münster commemorated the Westphalian Peace, which was concluded 350 years earlier in Münster and Osnabrück and brought an end to the 30 Year War in Europe.
In 2005 the diocese of Münster celebrates its 1200th anniversary.
These anniversaries all function in accordance with a successful principle: The city celebrates important events in our history with lots of guests from different nations. And the anniversaries are used to reflect upon and discuss for a whole year the ramifications of the respective incidents upon the following centuries and above all their significance for the future in numerous events. Schools and parishes, artists and sportsmen and women, universities and businessmen and women, clubs and authorities, neighbouring local authorities and twin towns ... in brief, all the groups, which want to contribute their view of things are involved in these events.
