Structural renewal of eroding harbour area
|
Project description:
|
The City Harbour of Münster, approx.1 km west of the inner city, has
been reducing the amount of its transshipment since the seventies. As a
result,a series of buildings and sites are no longer being used, respectively,
being occupied by users who are not dependent on the harbour location. Since
the beginning of the nineties, redevelopment is being carried out in the
harbour area, which, on the one hand, stabilises the harbour functions,
partly also, however, is intended to support structural change. In this
connection, the northern shore of the City Harbour I is being developed into
a "Creative Quay", as it is now called. This is a combination of
cultural, gastronomic and service centres, separated on a miniature basis
together with individual, remaining commercial enterprises.
Existing commercial buildings are being converted mainly for this use, in
single cases, new buildings are also being erected. After a trial period,
the creative quay has now been established as a location for services, and
is now well accepted by the inhabitants, both as an enterprise location and
cultural centre. The demand for office service locations is now also being
addressed to other harbour areas. Thus the project is an example of the
successful structural and functional conversion of an old industrial
location, using the existing building.
