Field of activity: Economical Land Management

Objectives: Reclamation of a former military area under conservation of the protection-ordered military buildings; integration of a residential, qualification and employment project.
Project description:

Gasselstiege
The Gasselstiege quarter on the area formerly occupied by the British Lincoln Barracks represents a successful example of the reclamation of former military areas. The development of the quarter is characterised by the great care taken in recasting the use to which the protected buildings are to be put, and by the innovative methods of constructing new residential areas. The Wohn + Stadtbau received an architecture prize for the careful manner in which they conducted the modernisation of the former barracks. Located only 2.5 km from the centre of Münster and yet immediately adjacent to the green belt, 349 residential units came into existence.
The inner area of the quarter will be largely free of cars; parking spaces will only be available at the boundary. A special car-sharing offer is used by the residents substantial. Moreover, the inner city is easy to reach by bicycle, and bus stops are located in the immediate vicinity.
The rebuilding of the former Lincoln barracks is an integral part of the residential, qualification and employment project. Under the heading "A roof over our heads", the building project offered young unemployed people, threatened with homelessness, the opportunity of acquiring qualifications, employment, and somewhere to live. The re-use of existing building materials, the construction of residential units, and landscaping were specific areas of activity which are being pursued.
Interactivity: Socially responsible housing provision
