Münster is authorised to call itself "The World's Most Liveable City". In 2004, Münster was the first German city to take first place at the International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom-Award) in the category of cities with 200,000 – 750,000 inhabitants. Münster outshone cities such as Seattle/USA, Okayama/Japan, Changshu/China, Poznan/Poland and Coventry/UK during the urban competition, organised by UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme, and IFPRA, the International Federation of Parks and Recreation Administration. Over 450 cities from around the world participated in the annual competition in 2004.
The jury awarded the best marks for the systematic development of city and region, the careful assimilation of historical heritage into city culture and the promotion of environmental protection and environmental awareness. The jury was particularly impressed by the fact that Münster's citizens voluntarily play an active, committed role in the city’s ongoing development.
The combination of dedicated citizens and foresighted environmental planning was crucial to the city’s success in another competition. In 2007, Münster represented Germany in the "Entente florale Europe" competition, where it was awarded the gold medal.
